conversations i never had

i haven't talked to you in a while
i mean, i have; we just haven't said anything
i mean, we pass in the halls and say hey
we talk at lunch about the Panthers and school
but we haven't really talked in a while
so i just wanted to say hey
and maybe we could talk
what about?
well, i don't know
which really means "there's so much i want to tell you
i want to tell you how the stars look before dawn in the winter
how i feel when nobody's around and how i feel when i think
about you and when i dream about you
and how i'm not quite sad even when i know
that the dreams are just dreams
because it's something just to dream about you"
but somehow that comes out "didja see the game thursday?"
and i wish someone could tell me where that came from
because what i was thinking was

and i don't think i ever told you

even when i can only see it in your eyes"
but that doesn't come out of my mouth
and this might be one of the reasons we never get around to talking
because i just stare with my mouth twisted in that annoying half-smile
and the people around you have some vital information
about the Panthers and school
so we never talk
and i never get you anywhere quiet enough
to hear what i'm trying to say
